Folding and thread sewing

General information
Thread sewing: the gold standard for high-quality bookbinding.
Our D-SIG and D-SIG PLUS machines are built specifically for thread sewing, the most durable and reliable bookbinding method. This traditional technique ensures exceptional strength and longevity, making it ideal for books with many pages or for premium papers that don’t absorb glue well – such as glossy or matte coated stock.
Think dictionaries, textbooks, catalogues and novels: products that need to be practical, long-lasting, and cost-effective. That’s why thread sewing is the perfect solution for those who value function just as much as form.
From a technical perspective, thread sewing involves stitching folded sheets (signatures) together at the centre using thread – typically linen, cotton, hemp or synthetic – before gluing the stitched block to the cover.
Unlike perfect binding, which relies on glue alone, thread sewing creates a single, solid block with superior flexibility and durability.
This technique delivers a finished product of the highest quality — and often at a lower overall cost for the client.
